Planned Training Day – 23 May 2021

Brittany Club of Great Britain – Sunday 23rd May 2021

Training Day to be held at the Halmer End Hall Farm, Shraleybrook Road, Halmer End, Audley, Stoke-on-Trent ST7 8AW (by kind permission of Duncan & Claire Richardson)

DIRECTIONS TO HALMER END HALL FARM

Leave the M6 at Junction 16 – you will need a sat-nav after this as it goes through narrow, twisty lanes.

First 20 dogs accepted – further days will be held here and at other venues. Email stevewright.falconer@virgin.net to book your place. Fee payable on the day – £10 for members, £15 non-members. Priority given to Club members.

YOUR BRITTANY (OTHER HPR BREEDS ARE WELCOME) DOES NOT HAVE TO BE TRAINED OR EXPERIENCED BEFORE COMING! We can help with everything from toilet training to advanced competitive work in different disciplines. Best of all we like to see owners and puppies develop a happy relationship and find exciting activities to do together. Any training helps you engage with your Brittany (and vice versa) and makes your walks trouble-free and improves his social behaviour at home or anywhere else.

You will also find he has a lot of talents that only need a chance to develop. Our range of varied activities can help you find those that appeal to you and your dog the most.

COVID PRECAUTIONS

Please do not attend if you are displaying covid symptoms, have recently returned from a designated “Red” zone country, are self-isolating or are in contact with anyone with Covid. Your temperature will be taken on arrival and entry will be refused to anyone whose temperature is outside the normal range. Bring your own masks please.

During the day work will be in small groups of up to 5 people with each instructor. Please observe social distancing, from everybody, at all times. Hand washes will be provided.

PROGRAMME

10.00 Introduction

Getting the right relationship with your dog and the principles of obedience – create willingness and respect, improve response, the dog’s understanding of your commands, develop handling skills. Training in basic heelwork, stays and recall. Advice available on behavioural problems.

A Brittany is a nose on legs and wants to use both bits of its anatomy to the full. Finding things and bringing them back to you is natural and satisfying for it. It also gives you something you can do anywhere, to enrich its exercise while engaging with you.

Quartering/Hunting: Start with finding hidden titbits or toys. How to encourage quartering. What do you do when it goes on point? How wide should it run and for how long? Steve Wright

Pointing (theory only unless suitable crop cover is available): Start with birds in the garden or flies in the backyard! Encourage steadiness.Flushing and preventing chasing. Introduction to caged game. Steve Wright

Retrieving: Playing with toys. Bringing toys back to hand. Varying articles, places and distance. Hidden retrieves. Developing temptations and increasing your control. Using dummies and introducing fur and feather. Maurice Cooke

Water retrieve: Confidence boosting for young dogs. Sue Connolly

Canicross – Katie Hayward: This is an opportunity to find out about a competitive sport that is very suitable for the pet Brittany and offers great outlets for their energy.

All these will take place at the same time and we expect you to move from one to the other as you wish.

MORE ADVANCED DOGS CAN BE GIVEN MORE ADVANCED EXERCISES – AND NOVICES WILL SEE A PROGRESSION OF STAGES TO AIM FOR BEFORE OUR NEXT TRAINING DAY, WHEN WE WILL HELP PREPARE YOU AND YOUR DOG FOR THE ‘TAN’ COMPETITION AT THE BRITTANY CLUB’S “LE WEEKEND”.

16.00 – 16.30 End of day

Questions and answers. Feedback of future needs.
